Egypt Internet Restored; Cairo Protests Turn Violent | WIRED
History of the Internet in Egypt. Internet started in Egypt in 1993 with a cable connection to France of a 9.6 kbps bandwidth to the Egyptian Universities Network (EUN) and the Cabinet Information & Decision Support Center (IDSC) with the National telephone organization (predecessor of Telecom Egypt) providing the infrastructure. The Internet in Egypt is an important part of daily life, as a majority of the population has access to Internet, via smartphones, Internet cafes, or at home. Broadband Internet access via ADSL is widespread. Egypt’s mobile phone operators offer USB modems that allow you to access the internet from anywhere, so long as you are within the provider’s mobile service area. They are available on both a pre-paid and monthly plan basis, and billing is generally done according to the amount of data sent. Internet access in most of Egypt is cheap and easy, with even the smallest and most out-of-the-way villages sporting at least rudimentary Internet capacity. You may have to elbow game-playing kids out of the way, but you'll be able to check the news and collect your messages. It is also worth noting Internet Access Free wi-fi is widely available in hotels throughout Egypt, though it's not always fast and often doesn't reach all the guest rooms. Many cafes in Cairo, and tourist centres such as Luxor and Dahab, also have free wi-fi.
In Egypt, broadband costs less than $15 monthly, but in Namibia it costs over $450. In Burkina Faso, the priciest of all, internet costs an astonishing $963 per month! On the other hand, a spacious apartment in the country’s capital will only cost you about $460/month .
